Welcome to Fifth Grade Science!

Welcome to fifth grade science!  I am Mrs. O'Steen and am very excited about his school year.  This blog is where I will let you know what students are currently doing in class as well as updates and reminders and information of upcoming events.  I will update it weekly so be sure to check it each week.

This year students will focus on four areas: The Nature of Science, Earth and Space Science, Physical Science and Life Science.  Students will take the state test this year not only in Reading, Writing and Math but in Science also.  We will study standards from third, fourth and fifth grade as this is a cumulative test.  Look for weekly homework this in science.

Updates Week March 18-22, 2019

I hope everyone had a fun, adventurous, yet restful Spring Break!  We have so much to still cover and review before end of the year tests come.  We are at the end of the third nine weeks and will have Friday as a planning day to finalize grades.  It's hard to believe that we are already here at the last nine weeks.  Students will still have math homework nightly and you will also see some Science homework coming home at times also.  Thank you for all your support at home!

Math
We have finished module 5 on fractions.  We are beginning module 6 which takes students into decimals.  Specifically comparing decimals to fractions.  We will go to the tenths and hundredths in fourth grade.  Students will have to make equivalent decimals to fractions as well as changing tenths to hundredths.  They will also work with decimals in word problems adding and subtracting them.

Science
We are going to be wrapping up our chapter on Space this week.

Updates Week February 18-22, 2019

We have been super busy in math the past few weeks.  Students have been working hard on remediation from the mid year scrimmage as well as new material in their Duval math module.  Students have received their mid term progress report last week.  If you have not signed and returned it, please have them bring it in this week signed.  Many students have received a multiplication timed facts test back to study these facts.  Students' fluency in their multiplication facts not only helps them when multiplying but also in division and fractions.  Students need to study these facts as well as complete nightly math homework.

Math
We are in module five now which covers fractions.  Students have learned how to decompose, make equivalent fractions as well as compare fractions greater than, less than, or equal to.  We are now working on adding and subtracting fractions.  Look for nightly homework for students to practice what we are working on in class.

Science
We have started the chapter on the earth, the sun and the moon.  Students will be working on these assignments in class.

Updates Week January 14-18, 2019

Well we are back and in full swing now after our nice vacation.  Students have taken home their second quarter report card and are earning their grades for the third quarter.  We will be hitting a very important time of the year where we are still learning new material but have gotten data to start remediating material that students still have not mastered.  Please look for nightly homework as it is not going to be enough anymore for students to just come to class and work and not do any studying or practice at home.

Math
We have finished the module 4 on geometry and angle measurement.  We will be taking the end of module test Thursday and beginning module 5 on fractions.

Science
We will be studying matter in science.
